Budget Analyst, Army Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies Office
Hire Date: August 2015
I became a Budget Analyst because I was in the right place, at the right time, with the right qualifications and drive. I was managing Department of Education funds for a for-profit institute of higher education and was one month away from completing my master’s degree. The Huntsville office unexpectedly closed so I was commuting to Birmingham and decided to look for a career change. I landed an interview with Canvas and was able to convince Canvas my background was a great fit for Canvas and DoD. I am so glad Canvas took a chance on me!
I support the Army Hypersonic Project Office (AHPO), part of the Army Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies Office (RCCTO) in Huntsville. AHPO’s Long Range Hypersonic Weapon (LRHW) is an experimental prototyping program that will deliver residual combat capability to Soldiers. Hypersonic weapons are a top technical research and engineering priority for the U.S. and I am proud to support this exciting effort.
The Army’s hypersonic team has changed drastically over the last 5 years. When I joined in 2015, we were a small team of 20 people conducting tests every 2-4 years. LTG Thurgood joined us in early 2019; the team grew exponentially, and the tempo kicked into over-drive. I am proud to have earned LTG Thurgood’s trust in executing and reporting AHPO financials. He even called me the “Money Ninja!”
I have had many professional and personal growth opportunities working for Canvas. While serving as the Keeping Canvas Cool Committee Co-Chair for three years, I was able to work with Girls Inc., Boys and Girls Club of North Alabama, Huntsville Hospital Foundation, and many other non-profit organizations. It is a priority for Canvas to make a positive impact in our local community and I cherish the relationships I built.
Systems Engineer, Missile Defense Agency
Hire Date: July 2016
I became a Systems Engineer because I like looking at the big picture and understanding how the different parts of the system or organization work together. Years of training, experience, and work relationships help me recognize problems or inefficiencies, recommend possible solutions, and figure out ways to resolve issues. During my military career, I worked on several large space acquisition programs without seeing the fruition of the projects because I had to move.
This time around, I have the opportunity to work on satellite projects from start to finish, or development through launch and operations. Specifically, I’m working on nanosatellites which is an evolving technology. I’m a member of a team that supports the development of small communication satellites. Because the trend in the space industry is “low SWaP” (size, weight, and power), we scout around for various sources, platforms, components, partnerships, technology, and acquisition strategies that will appropriately meet the customer’s experiment needs and potential future capabilities.
Space relevance is the name of the game. There is a growing need and appetite, domestically and globally, for services that have to be supported by space technology. With the creation of the Space Development Agency (SDA) and US Space Force (USSF), the DoD is grasping for ideas and solutions. Given the right vision and resources, companies like Canvas Inc., are in a unique position to provide technical, engineering, and programmatic support to our customers.
Canvas is the best kept secret in Huntsville. The work is very rewarding, and once your foot is in the door you have the opportunity to apply for other positions. Outstanding support for employees, family, and the community.
Operations Analyst, Missile Defense Agency
Hire Date: December 2019
Being an Operations Analyst allows me the ability to work closely with an organization whose mission is the defense of the United States, its forces, allies and friends. My job gives me a sense of fulfillment and day-to-day purpose. In the Logistics directorate, we make sure we maintain proper readiness and conduct necessary maintenance to remain mission capable at all times.
Recently I conducted an in-depth risk assessment of the Mangers Internal Control Program and worked to identify known challenges, possible risks and room for improvement. It broadened my thought process and challenged me to think from different perspectives.
To me, Canvas provides an opportunity to learn, grow and contribute to the organization. Canvas provides a teamwork-oriented and friendly environment that empowers employees to create and take initiatives. The opportunities at Canvas are endless. I feel my skills are utilized to the maximum, which allows me to grow within the organization.
