I fell into being an analyst. I graduated college with an English degree and a minor in Political Science and was planning on going to law school. However, before I could head to law school, I ended up being hired as a Technical Writer for a NASA contractor. I enjoy writing, proofing documents, and so it’s no surprise I never made it to law school. Over the years, technical writing has led me in different directions to include my current position.

I work as the Chief of Staff for the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) Chief Engineer. Flight test risks and failure reviews are daily projects at MDA. Understanding the risks any mission may be experiencing is vital to mission success. While failure reviews are not something you hope for, understanding and resolving how a failure happened is critical to possibly not experiencing it again.
REWARDING EFFORT
Last year, after I found out my Government customer needed assistance on his budget I volunteered to do the budget drill. It was a difficult task because 99% of the workforce was new, and the only person that knew the history was on vacation out of the country. I was able to pull the information together and submit a workable budget. My customer was exceptionally pleased with my work and recognized me with a Senior Executive Service note. Needless to say, the budget exercises have now become my responsibility!
WHY CANVAS
It is nice working for a company that knows you by name and not a number. Not only does the leadership know me but they also know my family. Canvas has a “family” atmosphere and as a result you are confident that Canvas wants you to succeed.

I always wanted to be an Engineer, but truthfully I really wanted to be an astronaut. My goal was to get a degree in Aeronautical/Astronautically Engineering, become a United States Air Force (USAF) Test Pilot, and then transition to the NASA shuttle program. I did get the degree, I did become a USAF officer in the Intelligence Carrier field, however I wasn’t cut out to be a pilot (had a hard time landing training aircraft). Overall, not too bad for a career.

I am the Technical Advisor / Subject Matter Expert on exploiting national technical means to improve our Nation’s capability to detect and track emerging threats to the Homeland and abroad. Every day is a new day, whether exploring the data from the previous 24 hours to providing recommendations for the next five years of research and development. I enjoy working with diverse distributed team spanning anywhere from four to 14 time zones. In my spare time, I enjoy working in Canvas’ Innovation Lab, Area 220, and exploring unique technology challenges for NASA and the US Army.
